Direct Cinema limited is the source when I purchased many videos
of my favourite Degrassi episodes. They are beautifully taped in colour, with no
commercials, like on PBS. Now with the explosion of the DVD market, you can most of the Degrassi TV series on VHS and DVD. Below are some online retail outlets that sell the series Note: On CBC, since there are commercials,
part of the Degrassi episodes are cut, but on PBS and if they are purchased through Direct
Cinema Ltd, they are complete, and uncut. Direct Cinema Ltd. Playing With Time now owns Epitome Pictures and it is owned and operated by Linda Schuyler and her husband/business partner Stephen Stohn. Stohn is also a fairly well known Entertainment and Intellectual property lawyer. In 1996 (?) Schuyler and former life/business partner Kit Hood went off in separate
directions. Kit Hood now owns a company called Timeless Productions in Toronto. He lives in Nova Scotia. Yan Moore and Phil Earnshaw, along with many other Playing With Time staff continued on with Schuyler and produced 2 seasons of Liberty Street, the series inspired by the movie of the week X-Rated. Epitome Pictures also created Riverdale, English Canada's first prime-time soap opera. The show was a flop, trying TOO hard to emulate Coronation Street. The series ended after three seasons. Currently, they are currently producing the 5th season of Degrassi: The Next Generation and the 2nd season of Instant Star, a teen soap opera based on the American Idol motif of a teen winning a contest and getting a record deal.
Epitome Pictures (formerly Playing with Time) moved from its famous 935 Queen Street location in East End Toronto (Leslieville) at Carlaw and Queen to an old warehouse on Bartley Street in East York. The place is in the middle of suburban hell and the neighbourhood is full of old warehouses, cheesy strip malls, cheesy restaurants and pubs, and big box suburban stores like Home Depot. The offices are not opened to the public unless you are from out of town and you contact them well in advance. In that scenario they may give you a tour. Due to the Degrassi Domain name dispute (Feb 2000-April 2001), I have been permanently banned from entering the Epitome Pictures studios. Oh well!
