Canadians experienced Degrassi
Junior High on January 18th 1987 on CBC, Sunday
afternoons. After the first season, it was boosted to
prime time. The Degrassi Series introduced us to a
variety of characters with a vast amount of emotional
problems.
American viewers were exposed to the series
months later, when it first made its premiere on WGBH
Boston. Here is a little known fact: On WGBH Boston, the
show was commercial free, so there were no cuts. On CBC,
unfortunately, the show had to be cut for commercials,
thus the full Degrassi episode was not shown on CBC, but
only on PBS, or any other network without commericals.
The Degrassi series depicts the
lives of a group of kids in an unnamed North American
city growing up. Many of the actors appeared in the
series prior, The Kids of Degrassi Street. The two series
are not linked, as the same actors took on different
characters. Although they may appear to possess similar
character traits, the two series were clearly un-related.
