It's time for their 10th anniversary high school reunion and that‘s the premise for Degrassi: The Next Generation. Joey Jeremiah (Pat Mastroianni) is a used car salesman, Caitlin Ryan (Stacie Mistysyn) is a famous environmentalist, Archie "Snake" Simpson (Stefan Brogren) is a teacher at Degrassi Community School, and Lucy Fernandez (Anais Granofsky) is a doctoral student at Carleton University. These cast members return for a one-hour special, to kick-off the series. They are reunited with Christine "Spike" Nelson (Amanda Stepto), who now owns her mum's hairdressing business. The special also re-introduces viewers to Spike‘s daughter, Emma (Miriam McDonald) and her friends Tobey and J.T., as well as other characters. Emma, who is now 12 years old is entering a Grade seven at the newly refurbished Degrassi Community School. The remaining 13-part series follows Emma and her "next generation" schoolmates Ashley Kerwin (Melissa McIntyre), Terri MacGregor (Christina Schmidt), Jimmy Brooks (Aubrey Graham), Sean Hope (Daniel Clark), Manny Santos (Cassie Steele), Liberty Van-Zandt(Sarah Barrable Tishauer), Paige Michalchuk (Lauren Collins), Gavin "Spinner" Mason (Shane Keppet), Toby Isaacs (Jake Goldsbie) and J.T.Yorke (Ryan Cooley). In a world influenced by the Internet, technology, cell phones, pagers, and other electronic technologies these kids are more media savvy and more articulate than their parents. At Degrassi Community School, the next generation is sure to encounter the same problems, issues, and challenges that the previous generation encountered.
